Each year in the glorious Oxfordshire countryside Oxford Mencap organizes 4 weeks of residential summer holidays for adults and children. On Top Camp around 6 campers attend each week together around 12 volunteers. These holidays have been running for over 40 years now so we know how much they are loved. If you are a good cook (doesn t have to be your career choice we would love to have you join us. For this week you will be cooking and preparing food for around 45 people per day. It should be basic healthy and timely we have a busy schedule and cater to the needs of some individuals. There is a budget and you have help from the other volunteers to prepare everything. Cooks are paid expenses of Â?250 week this is really a voluntary role. The most rewarding thing is the happy faces of volunteers and campers when you feed them after a day of exhausting activities And the kitchen is always a busy fun centre of activity on camp. This post provides excellent experience in catering. Each week is packed with organized outings and activities. Last year included horse riding the seaside Longleat Safari Park and a large outdoor maze to name just a few. In the evenings there are visits to the local pub and singing around the campfire. On the last evening of each week there is a traditional disco and barbecue where everyone gets dressed up requests all their favourite tunes and dance the night away The cook is required to cater as appropriate for all three meals each day but keep it simple eg cereal and toast Our volunteers on camp are organised by a camp leader and supported by a cook and the nurse. Each volunteer is usually allocated to one camper for the week. There is a full briefing on the needs of all the campers before their arrival at the beginning of the week and you get to meet the parents before the week starts so that you can discuss any individual needs of the campers. Forms are sent to you ahead of camp so you can raise any questions ahead of the holidays. The emphasis on Mencap holidays is on fun friendships and new experiences. Although the holidays do require a lot of energy they are also immensely rewarding.
